A very consistent blend that I love is Robert Mondavi.

Robert Mondavi comes under various blend. The Costal and the Woodridge are cheaper. If you want the good quality wine, the Robert Mondavi wine from Napa is very consistent. They tend to run $20-30, and they are one of the best value wine that can be bought easily at any grocery store.

As for the type, Mondavi have Cabernet, Merlot, both of which are tannic and therefore a bit bitter, but wonderful everyday wine. If you are looking for something sweeter, try Mondavi's Zinfandel, which is about $18-20 and has a bit of sweetness. If you want something light and fruity but not too sweet, try Mondavi's Pinot Noir, also about $18-20.

Incidentaly, if you want white wine, Mondavi makes some very good white. The Fume Blanc is a sauvignon blanc wine which is one of my favorite. There is also Muscato d'Oro and Botrytis, both which are great but underrated dessert wine.

Yellowtail Shiraz and Yellowtail Shiraz/Cabernet are great wines to start with. Barefoot merlot is also quite good.

A good starter wine if you decide red wine is a bit advanced for you would also be a Rose wine. I'm partial to Big House Pink, which goes for about $10 and is a blend of a few different grapes and is quite pleasant.

Believe it or not some of the wines sold in the 3l casks are excellent and are value for money.
Just pick the style you like.
